Men's Shed Permaculture Project

Kevin Upward from the Men’s Shed gave us a brief presentation about their project and are inviting Permaculture members and people within the community to participate.

The Sunshine Valley Men’s Shed are the beneficiaries of 4.5 acres of ex-strawberry farm which they intend to turn over to a Permaculture garden for the benefit of the Sunshine Valley Community.

The property is adjacent to The Men’s Shed in Blackall Range Road, West Woombye. They are about to start forming the parent beds and are well aware that it is going to be a slow ongoing project.

On Saturday, 19th of May from 10.30 am, Councillor Jenny McKay will be attending to lay the first bits of cardboard & mulch etc. Everyone is welcome to attend to view the plan and if possible, offer advice on how to set the garden up from a Permaculture perspective.

Keith is hoping to put on a sausage sizzle and will be inviting like-minded groups and individuals to attend. If you think that you may have an interest in this project, either as an individual or group, please contact Keith Upward, Project Officer by email: samkeith1@live.co.uk or samkeith2@bigpond.com or by phone: 5445-0629; 0405-641-155. Please share this with others.

May Meeting Update

We started the meeting with our Market stalls - plenty of free plants to take home & add to our gardens. Thanks to Sharon Gartshore for providing such an abundance of freebies to share.

Amongst the offerings were sweet potato vines and Mother of Herb cuttings.

Catriona manned our welcome desk and we had some new visitors join us for the first time.

It was great to see lots of new faces including Julie and Keith from Men's Shed who gave us a brief presentation on their land lease at West Woombye. They plan to run educational tours for schools and the community. If you're interested in learning more or being involved contact Keith - (07) 5445 0629 or email: samkeith1@live.co.uk

We had a lively Q&A session with Nicole Foss and Raul Meijer from The Automatic Earth with topics ranging from energy, the financial crisis, permaculture solutions, water and resilient skills for the future.

Nicole and Raul told us about the Sustainability Street initiative in Hubert Street, Fremantle, W.A. that was started from the ground up to create community. Watch the video to learn more.

There are other Sustainability Street initiatives out there now too.

We hope you'll join us for our next meeting on Tuesday, 5th June.
